Statement

Lately I have been fascinated by molecular structures.
This is just another outlet for my ongoing fascination with invisible realities.  Like the mythological paintings, which make little narrative or spatial sense but attempt to somehow achieve a greater truth or deeper insight into the unconscious inner workings of the mind, the molecular paintings attempt to breach our assumptions about the physical world by recontextualizing the fundamental but invisible building blocks of our sensual universe. I download diagrams and sketches of molecules from the chemistry databases of universities across the world. I then use software I download from the Internet to build two-dimensional renderings of three-dimensional space filled models. From there I can turn and manipulate them in virtual space and position them at any point of perspective I choose. I can then paint them (in oil) directly off the screen or use the models to build more complex compositions.  I tend to select molecules that are common to most people’s sentimental experience or molecules that have been popularized by political or commercial interests. I am especially curious about pharmaceutical rituals that replace prayer and the effect this has on a persons understanding of faith.
